Is Luxury Losing the Aspirational Shopper?

Luxury is slowing, especially among shoppers who used to save up for designer purchases. LVMH Fashion & Leather Goods sales fell 5% in Q3 2026, more than double what analysts expected.

People have been pulling back, because luxury prices have risen significantly and shoppers are more conscious of whether something feels “worth it.” Additionally, there is less interest in paying more purely for a logo or status symbol.

The shift: Instead of choosing between fast fashion and luxury, shoppers are increasingly looking for the middle ground. Quality, design, and recognizable taste have been gaining priority over the ultra-luxury price tag (brands like Polène, Reformation, Toteme have been flourishing). The aspirational shopper is still spending, just differently.

This shift matters in fashion because the brands winning may not necessarily be the ones with the highest prices; they’ll be the ones that can prove value through:

-Distinctive design

-Craftsmanship

-Cultural relevance

-A product that still feels special

What we are continuing to watch: Kering’s Q3 sales report on October 22nd:

Gucci and Saint Laurent share LVMH's customer base, so their results will show whether LVMH’s situation is a company problem or an industry-wide one.
